Hands of Heritage

acrylic, resin, paper, glue, thread, fabric, embroidery hoop, needle | 18 in x 24 in x 12 inch

This piece is inspired by my own cultural heritage and my experiences as a woman. Piñatas are a symbol of celebration and are often associated with Mexican culture, thus these hands are meant to represent how my own art is created through this lens. As for embroidery, I chose a medium that has long been associated with women and the domestic realm to capture how my experience has been shaped by my gender identity. The butterfly being embroidered is an original design that takes inspiration from Aztec depictions of Monarch butterflies and the association of these butterflies with DREAMERS and migrants - of which I am both.
